Meet the Staff – Ashley
April 23rd, 2010Meet the Staff – Interview with Courtney
April 19th, 2010What’s your name and what do you do here at Alan Murphy?
My name is Courtney Connelly and I’m a hair stylist. My specialty is in hair cutting. (laughs)
How long have you been a stylist here?
About a year a half.
What do you like best about Alan Murphy?
I love the atmosphere and I really love all the stylists. I love working in a big group of people. The salon loves to give us all the help and reference we need for anything that comes around so…it’s really good.
What’s your favorite hairstyle to cut?
I really like short hair. You know, like a pixie cut or a bob. Anything like that. I just really like multifunction hairstyles. I like you to be able to style it in a lot of different ways rather than having one set style.
So, you’re a multifaceted stylist?
Yes! (laughs) I like that word!
Do you give men cuts?
Yeah, actually most of my clientele are men right now. So, yeah.
How long have you been in the hair business?
Well, I was a salon manager for about four and a half years before I came here. So, I know the ins and outs of the business side of it as well. It was hard work managing stylists (laughs), but it was fun. I decided I wanted to move on to doing hair versus the business side of it.
What made you want to become a stylist?
Well, my mom is a really bad hairstylist (laughs). She doesn’t do hair, like, professionally or anything. But I went through stages in elementary school where I had really bad hair. (laughs) So, I was determined to do my own hair and ended up really liking what I did. I was always the kid with, like, the uneven bangs. (laughs) It was pretty awful, but it ended up being good motivation! (laughs)
What do you like to do outside of work?
I like to be outdoors. Not necessarily sporting kind of stuff because I don’t have much coordination (laughs). You know, I like to be calm. I like to read. I like to go to the dog park with my dogs; things like that. I also like being around family. I’m a family-oriented kind of person.
What kind of dogs do you have?
I have labs. THREE labs! (laughs)
Names?
Eve, Jiggy, and Darby.
What’s your favorite animal?
Other than dogs…probably fish. Fish are pretty cool, too. I really like cichlids cause they’re the bright, colorful ones. You know, the ones in a lot of Chinese restaurants in those aquariums when you walk in. (laughs) They’re really cool.

Alan Murphy Salon’s Guide to Shimmer
April 6th, 2010Spring is all about shimmer. We love the look of shimmer on eyes and cheeks, especially on tanned skin.
Here’s a how-to on getting the glow:
- When applying shimmer, flaky skin is the devil. The light reflecting pigments only highlight imperfections, so you should definitely prep your skin before shimmering up. You should exfoliate the skin to prep, then apply some hydrating lotion to moisturize the skin. Maybe Aveda’s Botanical Kinetics Hydrating Lotion?
- Smooth shimmer onto the eyelids with a large eye shadow brush — the fluffier, the better, for a light, even application. For a more concentrated application, wet a liner brush and apply at the lash line, or pat an eye or facial primer on your lids before sweeping on the shimmer.
- For a subtle, all-over glow, we suggest applying a loose shimmer powder underneath your foundation. You can mix it with a moisturizer or even your actual foundation, and a small amount will go a long way. For even more glow, use shimmer as a highlighter on the cheekbones and temples to reflect light.
- Apply eyeshadow on your cheeks and lips for a luminous glow. If you’re out of blush, lightly brush on a pink eyeshadow. For nighttime shine, dust shimmer into your hair. Overall, have fun with it!
